For years, most small and mid-sized businesses have judged marketing by what their analytics tool credits with the last click. That was never perfect, and it is getting worse. When people get answers inside AI Mode or decide from a map listing, they may never visit your site before they call or walk in.
The risk is cutting things that work because the report cannot see them. Search and brand activity are most exposed, because they often do their job before anyone clicks.
Count enquiries at the source
Start with the moment of contact rather than the website visit. Every call, WhatsApp chat, form and walk-in should be logged with how the person found you. Ask them, in a natural way, and record the answer in your CRM.
- Tracked phone numbers for your main channels, including your Google Business Profile.
- WhatsApp links with a pre-filled message per channel, so you can tell where chats started.
- A required "how did you hear about us" field for your team, with a short fixed list of options.
Watch branded searches
When marketing works, more people search for you by name. Google talked this year about tying branded search lift back to the ads that caused it, through a feature called Attributed Branded Searches. Even without it, you can track branded search volume in Search Console each month and compare it with what you were running.
Run simple tests
The most reliable way to know if something works is to switch it off somewhere and see what happens. Pause a channel in one area or for a few weeks, keep everything else the same, and compare enquiries. It is crude, and it is far more honest than a dashboard full of modelled numbers.
Larger advertisers can look at marketing mix modelling, which Google has now built into its paid analytics product through its open-source Meridian model. For most businesses, careful source tracking and the occasional test will get you most of the way there.
Keep one weekly number
Pick one number that sits close to revenue, such as booked consultations or viewings, and track it weekly by source. Put spend next to it. If that number rises while clicks fall, your marketing is working, whatever the traffic report says.
